The delay was announced a few days ago, and is due to the development team's desire to do some extra testing on the PC version. Sonic Mania Plus arrives July 17th Check out the games new features, a first look at Mighty and Ray, and treat your ears to a special remix of Time. Unfortunately, the launch trailer merely works as a tease for PC players who won't be able to experience Sonic Mania for another two weeks. 2D Sonic is back in an all-new adventure Play as Sonic, Tails, & Knuckles as you race through all-new Zones and fully re-imagined classics. The characters are drawn in the 90s era style so much so, that it appears to borrow heavily from animated opening of Sonic CD – and that's a good thing. Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails wander through a colorful Escher-esque landscape, where they occasionally jump through rings that take them to the various worlds found in Sonic Mania. You can also faintly hear the opening music notes from the Launch Trailer play at the very end of the Pre-Order trailer, if you listen closely. We decided to tell a story and connect the two trailers, hence the same elevator that (literally) bridges the end of one to the start of the other. The Pre-Order trailer animation was created second, after most of the work was done for the launch trailer. Spinning Knuckles on the ring at the end is one of my favorite parts.

Beginning in development in late 2020, the free download draws inspiration from games like Sonic 3 and Sonic Heroes. Sega's launch trailer almost looks like a promotion for an awesome Sonic throwback collection, but that's the point of Sonic Mania I suppose.

Starting out with a rough sketch of Sonic coming to life like that one A-Ha music video, the trailer quickly transitions to footage of the retro, pixelated graphics of the game itself. We have all sorts of cool WIP versions from along the way. Fallen Star includes cutscenes between each zone, special stages for collecting Chaos Emeralds, and about 50 original tracks. Tyson (the animation director) and Hyper Potions (Composers) spent over 6 months working with Sonic Team to create and finalize the animation to the point it is today. Once we all saw how amazing it had turned out, it was offered to the team to include in the game.
It was inspired by the Sonic CD opening animation, but was originally purely intended for the launch trailer.
